About Us

Remedy at UCSF is a student-run, faculty-supervised organization dedicated to actively promoting the recovery of unused medical supplies for the purpose of global aid, waste reduction, and cost-effectiveness.

Remedy was started by a group of medical students in 2004, focused on socially responsible medical supply relief for students and faculty going abroad. Equipment was initially collected from ORs and stored in student apartments. With the development of the program and collaboration with other community-based organizations (mainly Child Family Health International), they were able to collect over $10,000 worth of supplies in 2007 alone.

The program exponentially grew in 2008 and they were able to donate over 200 pounds to MedShare, a local organization that distributes supplies to clinics throughout South America, Africa, and the Middle East. During 2008, they additionally expanded efforts to 17 wards at UCSF-Moffitt/Long campus and started collaborating with the Green Group at UCSF. Over the past 4 years, they have since donated over 26,000 pounds of medical supplies.  With help from community partner MedShare, these supplies have reached over 70 countries.

Some of their additional achievements have included working with several San Francisco based CBOs; participating greatly in the relief efforts during Hurricane Katrina and Haiti (> 500 tons of supplies sent), and Pakistan earthquakes; obtain a subscription to UpToDate and starting a library in a a Uganda-based hospital previously without these resources; having students participate in UCSF's Community Health and Social Advocacy AOD specifically to ensure the sustainability of this student run organization; publishing their work in The Lancet specifically focused on running sustainable student based organizations geared towards environmental and health improvement, from which they received e-mails from many other medical schools across the country interested in started similar organizations; reliably sending equipment directly to communities in over 20 countries including in America; expanding their efforts to Kaiser Oakland.

While the organization has had obvious turnover in student leadership, there has been ongoing significant and concerted effort in sustainable socially responsible relief efforts.
