Resources for Parents at UCSF

Suggestions for graduate students and postdocs with families

We're starting peer support groups for graduate student and postdoc parents : email wilsUCSF@gmail.com for details!

WiLS has been organizing an annual panel discussion of how to balance family with a career in science.  Come to our event, or better yet, help us plan the next one!

If you're looking to find faculty, postdocs, or students who have kids, and who would be willing to talk about their experiences, send us an email!  We've got lots of contacts.

Some of the women faculty who participated in the Coffee Talks discussed their experiences being a mother and a professor (for example, listen to Dr. Susanna Rosi on this Carry the One Radio podcast crossover).  Come to future coffee talk events!

Note: WiLS events are open to all UCSF trainees: moms, dads, parents-to-be, and anyone else.

Nothing is better than free

  • best place to borrow DVDs & books about childbirth & infant care & parenting : the SF (or other local) public library system
  • best free kids museum to go to on a foggy day : the randall museum
  • best free-with-planning SF activities : checkout the SF Public Library Family pass program, now called Discover&Go http://sfpl.org/index.php?pg=2000812701

Summary of helpful information: Check out the hugely useful Raising Children in SF: A Survival Guide from First5.  This is especially good for parents on limited income (like grad students and postdocs).
